Wedding Anniversary - D Style

My husband and I have been married 14 years. We've been "together" almost 21 years - yes, I was merely a baby when we met. (Actually we met in college, but that would make old?)

To celebrate our anniversary this year, we decided to go back to our roots. Back to when we first fell in love. Back to how we used to have fun before kids, and mortgages, and jobs, and diabetes and stress. Yep... we went to a sports bar to watch the games, drink beer and eat chicken wings. (We went to school in upstate NY, awfully close to Buffalo... need I say more!)

The best part was that all the kids went to Grandma's house for the night. Football, beer, wings, NO KIDS - that's my kind of night!

But D being ever present, even on my anniversary, we ran into a bit of a snafu. 20 minutes after arriving at the restaurant, we get a call. It's Grandma. Grace's infusion site ripped out.

Here I should mention that Grandma's house is almost an hour away.

So picture me, in the parking lot of the bar (lets just admit that it was more bar than restaurant), talking my daughter and mother-in-law through a complete site change over the phone. Grace has never done a site change on her own, and Grandma has had limited experience with her pump.

And they did GREAT! I was on the phone for at least 20 minutes, but they rocked it! I remember how nervous I was the first time I put a site on Grace - I was sweating, shaking, trying not to cry, all the while attempting to look cool and collected for my freaked out daughter/patient.

But now Grace has watched me do it so often she easily handled changing the cartridge and tubing and prepping the injector-thingy. Then Grandma stepped in and actually did the "injecting" onto Grace's bum (only site we use so far).

It was a great anniversary present! We had a problem but no one panicked and we all got it fixed. I am so proud of Grace, and Grandma too! What a gift!

  1. Happy anniversary!!! What a great story! So happy you were able to talk them through the change and then move on with your fun evening!

BTW, I suspect we're close in age. ;)

  2. Sweet anniversary story! I know how difficult it is to find a night out with D in the mix. Happy Anniversary!

  3. Happy Anniversary - I am so glad you got our sans kids! And Grandma and Grace totally rocked it!!! Congrats!

  4. WAHOO...Happy Anniversary! AND GRANDMA and GRACE ROCK!!! What a great experience for them and you ... to know they can do it in the future if need be. I am glad you spent your anniversary in a sound like my kind of peeps!!!

  5. Happy Anniversary! And congratulations...on 14 years AND getting a night out without having to come back and do a site change.
My hubby and I just celebrated 11 years last week...we went out but had to walk my mom through the dinner bolus while in a very noisy bar at happy hour. Yep, there is no really getting away from D!!

  6. I love that they were able to do the site change over the phone - bravo for you and them!
    Happy Anniversary!
